Retell, Vapi and Famulor all build AI agents that talk on the phone. In a demo they look alike: write a prompt, pick a voice, make a test call, done. The differences show up afterwards: who changes the agent when a process changes? What happens when you need more than the phone? And how well does the platform fit when you run agents for your own clients?
This comparison is deliberately fair. Retell and Vapi are strong products with clear strengths. Everything we say about Retell and Vapi comes from their own public docs and pages (as of October 2026); you'll find the sources at the end.
The short answer
- Retell fits teams that want a managed voice stack and build agents with a prompt or a visual conversation flow, backed by strong testing and QA.
- Vapi fits developer teams that want to configure every component themselves and manage agents through an API, a CLI or config as code.
- Famulor fits businesses and agencies that want to start without code, run one agent across 22 channels and, if they like, resell it under their own brand.

Question 1: Who maintains the agent after launch?
An agent is never finished. Opening hours change, a new product launches, a question gets answered wrong. What matters is who makes that change, and how fast.
| Retell | Vapi | Famulor | |
|---|---|---|---|
| The agent is … | a prompt or a conversation flow in the dashboard | an assistant or a squad, in the dashboard or as config in code | an assistant with a prompt or a flow in the no-code editor |
| A change is … | an edit in the editor, with versions | an API call, a dashboard edit or a commit (GitOps) | an edit in the editor or a request to Milian, with versions |
| Who builds it? | Ops teams in the editor, developers via API | mostly developers | Business teams and agencies, developers via API, MCP or CLI |
| AI help while building | Conductor builds, refines and tests agents | Composer creates assistants and sets up numbers (alpha) | Milian drafts and improves assistants, flows and automations |
| Custom logic via … | Flows, custom functions or the code tool | Tools, squads and configuring individual components | Flows, API tools and automations; code optional via API, MCP or CLI |
Retell makes it easy for ops teams to maintain an agent themselves. Vapi shines when your team already thinks in code, reviews and deployments. Famulor is built for teams where the person who knows the process should also be able to change the agent, without filing an IT ticket.
Question 2: What happens outside the defaults?
Every platform handles the typical case well. It gets interesting with special requirements.
| I want to … | Retell | Vapi | Famulor |
|---|---|---|---|
| connect my own systems | Custom function or code tool | API request or function tool | API tool during the conversation or an automation in the background |
| use external tools via MCP | MCP tools and an MCP node in the flow | MCP tool | MCP tools per workspace and per assistant |
| have several agents work together | Agent transfer (tool and flow node) | Squads with a handoff tool | Flow builder with agent nodes and handovers |
| call a long list of contacts | Batch calls | Outbound campaigns | Campaigns by call, WhatsApp or SMS, with a follow-up |
| book appointments directly | Cal.com integration | Google Calendar or GoHighLevel tool | Built-in calendar or external booking tools |
| manage the agent from an AI app | Retell's MCP server | CLI and agent skills for coding assistants | MCP endpoint for AI clients |
A note for Vapi users: according to its own docs, Vapi retired its former Workflows product on August 18, 2026, and recommends assistants or squads instead. If you still rely on workflows, factor that into your planning.
Question 3: Which channels do you need besides the phone?
Customers don't just call. They message on WhatsApp, chat on your website or reply to a text. The more channels one agent covers, the fewer disconnected tools you need.
| Channel | Retell | Vapi | Famulor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone (inbound and outbound) | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Website widget | Chat, voice and callback | Voice and text | Voice and chat, optionally with an AI avatar |
| SMS | Yes, via Twilio numbers | SMS chat via 10DLC Twilio numbers | Yes |
| Not listed as a channel in the docs index | Not listed as a channel in the docs index | Text and voice | |
| Slack | Integration only, not a conversation channel (start calls, post results) | Integration only, not a conversation channel (send messages during a call) | Conversation channel with the same assistant |
| Messenger, Telegram, Teams, Discord, Google Chat, X | Not listed as a channel in the docs index | Not listed as a channel in the docs index | Yes, one shared assistant |
| Not listed as a channel in the docs index | Not listed as a channel in the docs index | Yes |
In Famulor, the same assistant uses the same tools on text channels as on the phone, such as the knowledge base, calendar and API tools. According to their docs, Retell and Vapi cover phone, web calls and website widgets, with SMS via Twilio numbers (10DLC for Vapi). Their SDKs give you room to build your own interfaces.
Question 4: Do you need white label, multiple languages or compliance features?
Three points often decide a project, especially for agencies and businesses with international customers.
White label for agencies
Retell gives each client a separate workspace, and callers hear the agent name, voice and greeting you set. According to Retell, its dashboard itself isn't rebranded; for a client portal you use the API or partner tools. Vapi has a partner program and lists third-party tools for branded client dashboards in its docs. In Famulor, white label is part of the platform: your own domain for the app, login, API and MCP, your own branding, legal pages and emails, plus separate client workspaces with your own plans. Read more in White label AI voice agent: launch your own brand.
Multilingual agents and live translation
All three support multilingual agents. Retell lets you pick the languages with a multi-select, Vapi relies on automatic language detection. Famulor works with primary and secondary languages, switches automatically and supports Swiss German. Where the selected engine supports it, you can also set a separate voice per language. On top of that there's Translate mode: two people speak different languages and hear each other translated live, in the browser or on the phone. Details in our post on the Famulor Translate agent.
Compliance features in the product
This is about features, not legal assessments. Retell offers retention rules per agent and expiring links for recordings. Vapi offers zero data retention and a recording consent plan. Famulor offers retention periods per data channel, opt-out management that enforces unsubscribes across all channels or per channel, and an automatic review of assistant instructions for prohibited use.
Testing before go-live
All three take testing seriously. Retell combines a playground, simulation tests, batch runs and AI QA. Vapi offers evals and simulations with AI testers and plugs into CI/CD. In Famulor, you create simulations with a persona, a goal and success criteria, either as a quick chat test or as a real voice call. Famulor can turn a real conversation from your history into a test case in one click, and Milian suggests ready-made personas.
Which platform fits which team?
| Your team | Good fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Developer team that wants to control everything in code | Vapi | API, CLI, config as code, squads |
| Ops team focused on phone agents and quality | Retell | Visual flow, Conductor, simulation and AI QA |
| SMB or business team without in-house developers | Famulor | No-code editor, Milian, templates |
| Agency selling agents under its own brand | Famulor | White label with domain, branding and client workspaces |
| Customer service across phone, WhatsApp and chat | Famulor | 22 channels with one assistant |
Choose Retell if you mainly run phone agents, want an ops team to maintain flows visually and need deep testing and QA tools.
Choose Vapi if your team is made of developers, wants to pick every component and ships agents the way it ships software.
Choose Famulor if you want to start without code, reach customers on many channels or offer agents as an agency under your own brand.
Already on Retell or Vapi? Here's how to switch
Famulor has a built-in data migration for Retell AI and Vapi. You see a preview first and pick the assistants you want. Name, system prompt, greeting and primary language are among the things that carry over. Imported assistants start inactive so you can test them calmly. You reconnect tools, flows and phone numbers afterwards. To plan the move, see the migration playbook for Retell, Vapi and Synthflow.

FAQ
What is the main difference between Retell, Vapi and Famulor?
Retell is a managed platform for voice and chat agents with a visual flow. Vapi is a developer platform with full control through an API. Famulor is a no-code platform for 22 channels with built-in white label.
Do I need to know how to code?
Not for Famulor: you build assistants in the editor or let Milian create a draft. Retell also offers an editor, but custom functions need endpoints or code. Vapi describes itself as a platform for developers.
Can I keep my own phone number?
Yes, with all three, via SIP trunk or number import. Famulor imports numbers from existing carrier accounts automatically or connects your own SIP trunk, with no porting.
Which platform supports WhatsApp?
Famulor supports WhatsApp for text and voice, including in campaigns. Retell's and Vapi's docs indexes don't list WhatsApp as a channel of its own (as of October 2026).
Can I test agents before go-live?
Yes. All three offer simulations with AI-simulated conversation partners. In Famulor you choose between chat and voice simulations and can create tests straight from real conversations.
Which platform works best for agencies?
Retell and Vapi have partner programs; for branded client dashboards, Vapi points to third-party tools. Famulor has white label built in: your own domain, your own branding and separate client workspaces in one platform.
Can I move from Retell or Vapi to Famulor?
Yes. The data migration in settings carries over assistants with their prompt, greeting and language. Your source account stays unchanged.
